Revitalized Daniil Medvedev Claims Maiden Trophy in 882 Days

19 of Medvedev's 21 titles have been earned on hard courts

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev won his initial championship for nearly 30 months with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.

The athlete, a former number one, has experienced a challenging season, managing just one match at the big events and experiencing a difficult moment at the US Open.

His unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serve in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the elite rankings and ultimately separating with long-time mentor his previous coach.

Currently working with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has consistently improved in the past month - culminating in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over Frenchman Moutet.

It is the player's initial title since the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hardcourt after that period of 2023.

The win also means the Russian has achieved 21 championships at twenty-one various tournaments.

"For the first time I have attended a tournament with my two daughters simultaneously, so to get a trophy is especially meaningful," commented ranked player the champion.

"This title is in honour of my child my daughter, because the first title I achieved when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."

The tennis star, the past champion, had failed in his previous six finals, featuring in Halle earlier this year.

The player's counter-punching play style and recurring emotional displays on the tennis court had prompted observers to question if his skill to play at the elite level was concluded.

Yet the athlete has made changes in the last few weeks, making an effort to advance forward and compete aggressively, supported by an enhanced serving game.

He came back from a deficit in the initial set against the challenging opponent, taking 4 of the last five points to take the lead.

Both players swapped breaks in the following set before the Frenchman, bidding for his initial professional championship, seized the initiative to push for a third set.

He saved 4 initial opportunities in a close deciding set before Medvedev secured a break to 15 to close out the victory.

Appropriately, he secured the win with a rally at the net, with Moutet failing to manage a return after a lengthy match.
